Abstract

Much is known about Brentano’s interpretations of Aristotle’s ontology and psychology. And even more is known about his account of intentionality, inner perception and descriptive phenomenology. What is less known, however, is Brentano’s overall conception of philosophy, its parts and its relations to other forms of cognition. Yet it is precisely within such an architectonics of philosophical sciences that the role that Brentano assigns to ontology, psychology in general and phenomenology in particular can be fully understood. In this lecture I will attempt to reconstruct Brentano’s understanding of philosophy from his still unpublished lectures on Metaphysics, delivered in Würzburg between 1867 and 1872.
