Filosofia Animal (3º Ciclo): Espécies companheiras: Leituras de Donna Haraway (2º Semester)

O grupo de leitura Filosofia Animal tem como objectivo ler e discutir textos clássicos e contemporâneos que se dediquem à análise das complexas relações entre humanos e outros animais, abarcando também o tema da animalidade, nos âmbitos da ontologia, da política, da cultura, da ética e da actual crise ecológica, transitando por diferentes campos do conhecimento. Neste tercer ciclo nos enfocaremos na obra de Donna Haraway, cujas reflexões convocam a pensar o reconhecimento dos animais como alteridades significativas fundantes para o vir-a-ser, a dissolução do antagonismo entre natureza e cultura ou a admissão de diferentes modalidades de parentescos a partir da percepção de que somos compostos por vários outros, onde todos são participantes e remodelados uns com os outros.
The Myth of Antigone: Feminist Interpretations (2º Semester)

The figure of Antigone has attracted particular attention within the philosophical reflection as a representative of that poignant — and unsolvable — dilemma emerging from the clash between divine laws, requiring proper burial of the dead, and human laws. But Antigone is not a random character who imposes her individuality against the laws of the polis: she is a woman, and it is precisely because of this that she can occupy a place of rebellion in Sophocles’ tragedy. In this series of readings we aim at addressing the feminist analyses of the Antigone myth that have most influenced contemporary thought, namely that of Luce Irigaray, Adriana Cavarero, Julia Kristeva, and Judith Butler.

This reading group focuses on the ever-changing and undetermined philosophical interpretation of Genealogy. The sessions will regard the birth and development of Genealogy in its relation to History within the philosophies of Nietzsche and Foucault, the implications on their methodologies and, finally, to what ends it is applied. All these issues will be addressed chronologically, through selected excerpts of both authors and considering the broader scope of critique in which their genealogies either enter in discord or concord.
Marx: Da alienação ao feiticismo (2º Semester)

Célebre nos estudos à volta de Marx, o conceito de alienação (Entfremdung) tem norteado muitas meditações inspiradas no pensador de Trier. Porém, se olharmos para os textos de maturidade deste autor, rapidamente notamos não só a inexistência deste conceito, como até reparamos um certo cuidado para que ele não seja referenciado de modo explícito. Em vez de tal, vemos como os temas antes abordados com base nessa clave da alienação parecem surgir mais tarde sobre o estandarte do feiticismo da mercadoria (Warenfetischismus). Com base neste horizonte o presente grupo de leitura propõe um acompanhamento dos momentos cruciais onde é possível surpreender esta mudança de rumo teórica na obra de Marx.
Topics of Social Philosophy and Critical Theory (2º Semester)

SS 2021/22: “Forms and Strategies of Critique”. This term the reading group will focus on the notion of “Critique”, which will be addressed systematically rather than historically. The objective is to revisit and track down the operative forms and strategies rendered by critical social theory (immanent- and ideology critique, genealogy, critique of power) in order to address their different objects of critique. In other words, by analyzing the limits and contours of their targets (ideology, power, etc.), the aim is to reconstruct and bring into light both the nuances and the reach of their methodological procedures.
Filosofia Animal (2º Ciclo): Devires-animais? (1º Semester)

O grupo de leitura Filosofia Animal tem como objectivo ler e discutir textos clássicos e contemporâneos que se dediquem à análise das complexas relações entre humanos e outros animais, abarcando também o tema da animalidade, nos âmbitos da ontologia, da política, da cultura, da ética e da actual crise ecológica, transitando por diferentes campos do conhecimento. Dando continuidade aos estudos realizados no primeiro ciclo, onde trabalhámos o livro “O animal que logo sou”, do filósofo Jacques Derrida, com ênfase no reconhecimento dos animais como alteridade radical pela via do olhar, neste segundo ciclo daremos enfoque a algumas contribuições que se engajam, sejam no pensamento ou nos modos de viver, na assunção de que os animais tenham, cada um, seus próprios pontos de vista e suas próprias experiências.
Desiring Images: Contemporary devices between repression and resistance (1º Semester)

The ever-increasing centrality of images within modern media culture, characterised by the massive digitalisation of society and their free and indiscriminate profusion, allows us to speak of a veritable pictorial turn, which has invested every field of knowledge. The link between image and politics, and therefore also between image and desire, has been the subject of profound reflection in many philosophers of the last century. In this reading group, we would like to address and reflect upon the following questions: What is an image and what is a device? And how are they interrelated? In the digital age, can the free proliferation of images only serve as a means of coercion and repression, or do other paths and strategies exist? Can the image still be an act of resistance today? And if so, how can we educate ourselves to make it possible?
