Abstract

According to the usual thesis, Nietzsche’s confrontation with antiquity tends to be ciphered in the critique of Socratic intellectualism and Platonic dualism. This perception is certainly fed by elements contained in his famous work The Birth of Tragedy of 1872. And yet, the recent discoveries of the Nietzscheforschung in philological matters force us to relativize this consideration and to start considering Aristotle as his greatest enemy in the struggle against Western tradition. On the basis of barely studied Nietzschean texts, this paper seeks to delve into the reasons for this misunderstanding between Nietzsche and Aristotle, generally unknown but fundamental for the configuration of the rest of his philosophy.
