Sala Mattos Rom\u00e3o (Departamento de Filosofia)* |<\/strong> School of Arts and Humanities \u2013 University of Lisbon<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n In The Crisis of European Science and Transcendental Phenomenology<\/i>, Husserl declares philosophers the \u2018functionaries of the mankind\u2019, asking \u2018How can we avoid it?.\u2019 In The Courage of the Truth<\/i>,\u00a0 Foucault declares the Ancient Cynic \u2018a functionary of humanity in general\u2019. This paper examines how and why these two different philosophers make similar declarations despite the general mistrust in functionary. The similarities between Husserl\u2019s and Foucault\u2019s arguments point to a double resistance which is part of the process of becoming a \u2018functionary of humanity\u2019: resistance against the very stance of a functionary, with its hierarchy and constitutive vicariousness, and resistance against the current meanings of humanity. <\/i>This resistance makes possible a \u2018life in truth\u2019 and opens the potential imprisoned in the current understandings of humanity. Thus, Husserl\u2019s and Foucault\u2019s use of expression \u2018functionary of humanity\u2019 allows mapping a \u2018function\u2019 that could justify the invocation of this peculiar functionary: to keep humanity open, which enters into a challenging dialogue with the recent accounts on post-humanism.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n *\u00a0The event will also be available via Zoom for those unable to attend in person.
