Labour, Intelligence, Automation: Tracing AI’s Coming of Age

in conversation with the author, Matteo Pasquinelli

Sala Mattos Romão

Contrary to popular views on AI, The Eye of the Master: A Social History of Artificial Intelligence (Verso, 2023) contends that, historically, artificial intelligence has not been the attempt to mimic biological intelligence, but rather the quest to automate, measure and hierarchically organise manual and mental labour. Tracing a compelling genealogy of technology and automation from its early manifestations up to contemporary computation, the book argues that computer algorithms have consistently reflected, reproduced, and crystallised the abstract diagrams and patterns that are already present in the social division of labour, as well as in social relations at large.
In this workshop, we invite the book’s author, Matteo Pasquinelli, in a conversation with various commentators around the main themes of the book, as well as the theoretical and political challenges that surround AI at the time of its coming of age. Commentators will include:

- Andrea Pavoni (ISCTE University Institute of Lisbon)
- Antonio Oraldi (CFUL, University of Lisbon)
- Amedeo Policante (NOVA University Lisbon)
- Erik Bordeleau (NOVA University Lisbon)
- Francisco Nunes (NOVA University Lisbon)
- João Pedro Cachopo (NOVA University Lisbon)
- Tamara Caraus (CFUL, University of Lisbon)
