Description

This project aims to promote the translation into Portuguese of the complete set of the Aristotelian corpus, comprising: the set of works included in the Bekker edition plus the Athenian Constitution; the fragmentary texts attributed to Aristotle’s lost books; and the apocryphal works in circulation under Aristotle’s name in later periods, such as the Book of Causes and the Secret of Secrets. The complete works resulting from this project constitute, at an international level, the sole edition to contain these latter texts. By undertaking the translation of this entire collection, this project becomes therefore the first and, to date, the only one world-wide to encompass what can arguably be called the whole Aristotelian legacy.

The edition is being produced in collaboration with INCM, and consists of 43 volumes, bringing together a total of 41 Portuguese and Brazilian collaborators from several Universities, both Portuguese and foreign.

17 volumes have already been published. In addition, the following work is in print and will be published by the end of 2021:

IX.5: On Melissus, Xenophanes and Gorgias. On Virtues and Vices. Rhetoric to Alexander.

I.4: Posterior Analytics;

II.1: Physics.

The preparation of the following translations, which began during previous stages, will be concluded under CWA-6:

I.3: Prior Analytics;

I.6: Sophistical Refutations;

II.2: On the Heavens;

II.2: Parva Naturalia 1-8;

IV.4: Motion of Animals. Progression of Animals;

VI.1: Nicomachean Ethics.

During this stage, preparation of the following books will be started:

V.2: Metaphysics VII-IX;

VI.2: Magna Moralia;

VII.1: Politics;

VIII.2: Poetics;

XI.1-2: Fragments of the Treatises, Monographs, Collections and Private Texts;

XII.2: Book of Causes. Book of the Apple.

CWA-6 corresponds to the penultimate phase of the project, after which a final one will be launched for the preparation of the last 7 volumes.

The main goals to be achieved by this project are as follows: 1) to considerably widen the knowledge of the Portuguese-speaking readership about fundamental texts in the history of philosophy; 2) to promote a direct contact of Portuguese-speaking graduate students with the works of the Aristotelian corpus; 3) to stimulate research on classical philosophical thought at Lusophone Universities; 4) to foster advanced studies on Aristotle and the Aristotelian tradition in Portugal and other Portuguese-speaking countries; 5) to encourage and consolidate scientific and scholarly exchanges between Portugal and Brazil, and, in a general way, Latin America and the areas of influence of the Iberian languages; 6) to strengthen the internationalisation of national scientific research on ancient philosophy. These goals have been successively pursued since the beginning of the project’s first phase, in 2004.
