António Pedro Mesquita

Academic Degree:
PhD
Professional Category:
Associate Professor

António Pedro Mesquita is a professor at the Department of Philosophy and a researcher at the Centre of Philosophy of the University of Lisbon.

His research interests are mainly in ancient philosophy, particularly metaphysics, philosophy of language and theory of science. However, he has also worked in contemporary Portuguese political thought and didactics of philosophy.

He has published primarily on Plato, Aristotle and the Aristotelian tradition, and on Portuguese political thought from the XVIIIth to the XXth century.

Since 2002, he has been leading a project aiming at translating into Portuguese all of the works attributed to Aristotle, including not only the set of works included in the Bekker edition plus the Athenian Constitution, but also all the fragments attributed to Aristotle’s lost works and the apocryphal works in circulation under Aristotle’s name in later ages, such as The Book of Causes and the Secret of Secrets. These translations are currently being published in Portugal (by the Imprensa Nacional – Casa da Moeda) and Brazil (by Editora Martins Fontes), twelve of them being already available.
